about

Wormhole (2017) by Erin Rogers

Clever manipulation of air sounds, venturing across electronic and acoustic terrain, with excessive instrumental baggage, "Wormhole" weaves phrases together carefully, using unexpected sounds and vehicles. From saxophone-to-bellow-foot-pedals-to-whistles-to-megaphones, each object produces sound via a degree of forced air, the two performers visually embedded within a junkyard of mechanisms. Sound points are amplified via standard, contact, and capsule microphones, zooming-in so that action can be seen and heard through the smallest of apertures. Acoustic lines are further enhanced through the application of reverbs and the freezing of select moments.

Written for two players and a pile of junk/instruments, including tenor saxophone and melodica, Wormhole was premiered by Popebama at the 2017 New Music Gathering; Bowling Green, OH (acoustic version). The revised/amplified version premiered at the 2018 Splice Festival; Kalamazoo, MI.
Recorded by Popebama January 9, 2019 at Adelphi University Performing Arts Center, Garden City, NY.
