about

Light-On-Light (2018) by Erin Rogers

Written for soprano/tenor saxophone/electronics + percussion/electronics, Light-On-Light places chamber music in a performative realm, using text, improvisation, electronics, and techniques such as breath sounds, amplified vocals, and instruments-used-as-other-instruments (at times, a saxophone is performed by the percussionist as a percussion instrument). The effect is visually surprising, yet sonically immersive. Described as "a journey through time and transport," percussion instruments create an industrial backdrop, featuring frame boards, found metals, scraped tiles, china cymbal, with an extended caixixi solo, where the shakers are heavily processed in realtime via octave-shifting and boss DD6 capture pedals. Spatially-conceived train samples move through the space, triggered by the saxophonist who, in addition to performing on saxophone, executes hybrid vocal techniques and delivers text.

Adapted for Popebama from the trio version of the same name for saxophone, 2 percussion and electronics.
The original trio version was commissioned by Music at the Anthology, Inc. for the 2018 MATA Festival of New Music and begun while in residence at Copland House. The duo version premiered October 25, 2018 by Popebama at Hochschule für Musik Freiburg, Germany.
Recorded by Popebama January 17, 2020 at Adelphi University Performing Arts Center, Garden City, NY.
